Our Philosophy

It is our philosophy that an optimal treatment plan for cancer should provide much more than a single treatment modality. To be successful an alternative, cancer treatments plan needs to be multi-modal and fight cancer by attacking the tumor directly, crippling a cancer cell's metabolism and energy production, cutting off blood supply to the tumor, stimulating the immune system, and inhibiting treatment resistance. Importantly, restoring health and healing vitality to the person fighting cancer is of utmost importance and must be a priority as well.

Integrative Medicines and Treatments

We use a variety of medications, highest-quality supplements, herbal medicines, IV treatments, physical medicine, and dietary plans when creating protocols for our patients. As stated previously, our physicians have the experience to safely incorporate our recommendations into a patient's current cancer treatment protocol. By doing so patients often experience better results, increased overall health, and less adverse medication reactions. We believe that as your doctor it is our duty to work with the other health care providers on your medical team. The best results are often achieved when using naturopathic, alternative and conventional cancer treatment approaches in an integrative fashion, rather than relying on solely one or the other.

Preventative Cancer Care

Our experience also provides us with the ability to offer guidance to patients about how to prevent cancer recurrence. This extends beyond providing our patients with specific lifestyle and nutritional changes, but also to the use of targeted therapies used to make the body an inhospitable place for cancer to survive. Today's technology allows for the identification of risk factors associated with increased cancer risk. It is important to identify and eliminate these cancer risk factors not only for the primary prevention of cancer, but also for the prevention of cancer recurrence.

The Problem with Vitamin C for Cancer Treatment

The Problem with Vitamin C for Cancer Treatment

March 19, 20244 min read

Chances are you are aware that vitamin C is good for you. The health benefits of this vitamin are many, from fighting the common cold, to helping speed trauma recovery by strengthening connective tissues, to this vitamin’s ability to stabilize mast cells and prevent allergy. Most famously, let’s not forget that vitamin C in the form of eating limes helped the British prevent scurvy while crossing the Atlantic, and thus earned them the Limey nickname.

In fact, vitamin C enjoys an almost celebrity status in the vitamin world. Very few vitamins reach the height of popularity that vitamin C has. Nearly all other vitamins have ongoing debates regarding either their safety prolife or their usefulness. In some instances the concerns fueling these debates are valid, in others the concerns are more fairytale than reality. However, with vitamin C, such debates over safety or efficacy largely do not exist. Nobody is arguing the fact that taking large oral doses of vitamin C may require some people to keep a close proximity to the porcelain throne. However, this action can also make vitamin C useful in situations where things become backed-up and it becomes difficult to move things along. Likewise, nobody is debating the fact that vitamin C is essential to human health and may even help prevent the common cold.

One very interesting action of vitamin C is it’s ability to selectively damage and destroy cancer cells. This cancer-destroying action of vitamin C has an equally interesting mechanism of action. As it turns out, this action of vitamin C is due to the fact that it is absorbed into our cells by the same receptors that absorb sugar. This is important because the most basic definition of cancer is “uncontrolled cellular division.” This means that cancer cells keep making new cancer cells despite the body’s attempts to stop the process. All this increased cellular reproduction requires energy, and one of the ways in which cancer cells produce energy is by metabolizing sugar. Cancer cells require so much energy that they can actually increase the number of sugar receptors on their surface in order to out compete normal cells for the sweet stuff.

When a person receives intravenous vitamin C, the sugar receptors start pumping the vitamin C into cancer cells with a gusto rivaled only by a starving man at an all all-you-can-eat buffet. Once that vitamin C is inside the cancer cell a series of chemical reactions occur which ultimately produces a large quantity of electron-stealing free radicals inside the cancer cells. With all of these damaging free radicals being generated inside the cancer cell, the cell’s defense systems become overwhelmed and fatal damage is inflicted. It’s interesting to note that this sort of free-radical mediated damage is also how many conventional cancer treatments work, with one big exception. Vitamin C does not adversely affect normal cells.

Vitamin C IV Therapies

In fact, high-dose intravenous vitamin C IVs are nearly free of adverse treatment-related side-effects. While some of the vitamin C will surely end up inside of normal cells, this vitamin C is broken down into substances like oxygen and water. Higher doses of IV vitamin C can cause a headache in dehydrated people, and some may experience hypoglycemia when receiving these IV. Both the potential headaches and the hypoglycemia can easily be avoided by taking the proper steps. Additionally, on a systemic level, vitamin C improves the functioning of the immune system, promotes increased connective tissue strength, and has been shown to improve quality of life and longevity in people fighting cancer.

So what’s the problem with vitamin C and cancer?

According to Dr. Jonathan Psenka at Chambers Clinic, the problem lies in utilization. "Despite research and clinical trials showing that vitamin C IVs are both safe and effective, they are rarely being recommended outside of the naturopathic medical office. Concerns regarding compatibility with conventional treatments have been addressed with research, showing not just the ability to be safely administered with many conventional treatments, but that the addition of vitamin C may actually improve the effectiveness of conventional treatments. The current success rate with cancer is not so good that we can afford to overlook a non-toxic, cancer selective treatment proven to improve the quality of life in people fighting cancer."

Testimonials

“After being diagnosed with prostate cancer, I decided to seek independent advice and possible treatment in Arizona. He helped me digest the mountains of information and advice that I’d received from well-meaning naturopaths, urologists, family physicians and friends, as well as the multitude of reading that I had done on the subject. I recommend that you contact him if you find yourself in this dilemma. To this day, we continue to rely on his advice.

*** P.S. I am now 12 months free of cancer!”

“I first met Dr. Psenka after I finished my 3rd round of chemo for metastatic breast cancer. Our initial interview lasted over and hour and Dr. Psenka acted as though he would stay there all day if that is what it took to get all my questions answered. He has an incredible grasp of the mechanics of my disease and was very informative on what immune support, nutrition. and treatment he would recommend. I wish I would have started with his regime at the onset of my breast cancer, as I feel the outcome would have been different. I am stable now and my last PET showed no activity in my bone lesions. The nutritional support has kept me as healthy as one could be having the chemo/radiation that I’ve had. I work full time and lead and active life. I see my oncologist regularly, as well as Dr. Psenka. I feel this gives me the best advantage I am going to have to survive. I would encourage anyone with an early diagnosis of cancer to consider alternative therapies along with their chemo. Dr. Psenka and his staff are a great team and a remarkable resource to help anyone through this difficult diagnosis.”

I appreciated that Dr. Psenka was unhurried and happy to spend as much time as was needed to discuss our concerns, answer as many questions as came up, and explain his philosophy and approach to treating YOU. He was approachable and listened… rather than just talked/lectured. I get the feeling that he’s always thinking head of the “what if’s” and “how to’s”. I know one thing for sure… I would want him on my team!” -from a friend of a patient who participated in the initial consultation”
